Marine tunicates collected from Tuticorin, southeast coast of India, were found to be a promising source of novel bioactive compounds against human urinary tract pathogens. Methanol and ethyl acetate extracts of Phallusia nigra was tested against five human urinary tract pathogens. Streptomycin (400μg/ml) was used as a standard and dimethyl formamide as control. Notably, both methanol and ethyl acetate extract of P. nigra showed activity against all the UTIs strains tested. The methanol extract displayed higher antibacterial activity than ethyl acetate extract. Antibacterial activity of ascidians extracts increased with increasing concentrations.
