Studying People of the Sundarbans and their Environmental Adaptation
2012
Joensen, Maria
Through Ghosh's The Hungry Tide and various other sources, this project seeks to learn about the people living in the Sundarbans; a mangrove forest and delta in the Bay of Bengal. Tides, storm surges and cyclones have a great impact on the environment and the people. They face many hardships but excel in adapting to the environmental changes. These abilities can be contributed to their persevering attitude. To protect themselves they build embankments, houses on stilts, rely on trees for protection, and rely on each other as well as God or several gods for support. The issue of representing these people is discussed through the postcolonial theorist, Chakrabarty, and literary critic, Spivak. Their work is concerned with subalterns and imperialistic or Eurocentric representations of them.
