There were investigated copper-induced abnormalities in embryogenesis of the freshwater pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis as a result of exposure to ranged copper concentrations: 0,01, 0,1 and 0,5 mg/1. For the detection of disruptions of embryonic development of the gastropod pond snail under laboratory test conditions there were used following criteria: embryonic mortality, the degree of developmental delays and hatching efficacy. There was shown a statistically significant copper sulfate effect according to such endpoints as increased embryonic mortality, developmental delays and abnormalities, and decreased hatching success in a concentration-dependent manner. The exposure to the metal resulted in an increased embryonic mortality at the end of the fourth and the tenth day of exposure for 0,1 and 0,5 mg/1 copper, correspondingly. Obtained data suggest that some of proposed criteria of disruptions in embryonic development of Lymnaea stagnalis can be used as a sensitive tool for surface water monitoring. Beside this, our results suggest the expediency of toxicological biotesting on pond snail larvae to detect copper-contained sewage and other potential toxic substances.
