SISTEMA DE PRODUCCION DE RUMIANTES MENORES EN COCHABAMBA - BOLIVIA

anglais. The objective of the present study was to characterize the production system of sheep and goats in three communities in the south of the department of Cochabamba. Thirteen families were visited every two months from March 2010 to February 2011. Methods of direct observations and semi structured interviews were applied, collecting data about livestock numbers, use of products of small ruminants, infrastructure for livestock, management, animal nutrition, gender aspects in decision taking, uses and importance of sheep and goats. An analysis of variance was carried out about the effect of communities on livestock numbers. The families of the study own higher numbers of small ruminants in comparison with other species. Management is mainly the task of women with the help of their children. It’s equally the women who take most decisions about activities related to small ruminants; men decide only about the acquisition of external inputs. Manure is the most important product; the abilities most appreciated are the use for saving and the resilience of animals. It is concluded that small ruminants play a very important role for smallholders.

espagnol; castillan. El objetivo de esta investigación fue caracterizar el sistema de producción de ovinos y caprinos en tres comunidades del Cono Sur del departamento de Cochabamba. Se visitaron trece familias cada dos meses desde marzo de 2010 hasta febrero de 2011. Se aplicaron métodos de observaciones directas y entrevistas semi estructuradas. Se recolectaron datos acerca de la tenencia de animales, usos de productos de rumiantes menores, infraestructura ganadera, manejo, alimentación, aspectos de género en la toma de decisiones, usos e importancia de ovinos y caprinos. Se realizó un análisis de varianza sobre el efecto de las comunidades en la tenencia de animales. Las familias involucradas tuvieron mayor número de rumiantes menores en comparación con otras especies. El manejo es mayormente tarea de las mujeres ayudadas por los hijos. Son también las mujeres las que toman las decisiones sobre la mayoría de temas relacionados con los rumiantes menores, solamente en la decisión sobre la compra de insumos externos son los varones los que deciden. El estiércol es el producto más importante y el ahorro y la rusticidad de los animales son las aptitudes más apreciadas. Se concluyó que los rumiantes menores juegan un rol muy importante para los pequeños productores.
