Correlation between virulence factors of staphylococci and pigment production

This work aimed to study some virulence factors of Staphylococci and correlation between these factors and pigment production. Samples were collected from bovine milk, nasal swabs from cattle and sheep, and pus from abscesses in cattle and equine. Samples were examined bacteriologically for isolation and identification of Staphylococci as well as further identification of S.aureus enterotoxin A (SEA) via PCR using species specific primer. Out of 160 collected samples, 79 (49.3%) isolates of Staphylococci could be isolated. Twenty out of 79 (25.3%) of the isolates produced golden yellow pigment and were positive for both coagulase and haemolysis tests. Three isolates out of eight biochemically identified coagulase positive Staphylococci were positive for SEA as detected by PCR. This means that all staphylococcai isolates that produced golden yellow pigment were positive for coagulase test, while 65% of the isolates gave alpha-haemolysin, and 37.5% were positive for SEA.
