Lessons learned on trade and sustainable development

Drawing on six years of research from the Trade Knowledge Network (TKN), this paper provides an analysis of the subset of the issues touched on by the TKN research. They include:Is trade good or bad for the environment?: No general answer can be given; The final impacts in any given country will depend on the sector’s economic characteristics.Tensions between environment and development: there can be tensions between environmental goals in developed countries and economic development in developing countries. However measures in question are not necessarily born of protectionism. Trade-related environmental standards: TKN research seems to confirm that developing countries face pressing challenges in meeting environmental requirements in their target markets.Domestic and international institutions: research shows that if trade and trade liberalisation are to result in sustainable development, there is a need for strong domestic and international institutions to manage the process.Southern agenda on trade and environment: Internationally the South identifies a need to tighten the criteria used to identify measures of support as falling under the WTO Agreement on Agriculture's (AoA's) green box, and a need to establish a special category of developing country sustainable exports, subject to more favourable treatment.
