Study on possibility of the frequent planting of cultivars of sweet corn the greenhouse of Jiroft area.

One of the problems of greenhouses in Jiroft is that they are always dedicated to the cultivation of cucumber, which poses such problems as the application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and the epidemics of pest and diseases. Given that sweet corn has a short growth period and its consecutive planting is possible and so, it can rotate the cucumber in greenhouses as a profitable crop, a split-plot experiment was carried out based on a randomized complete block design with three replications in two growing seasons of 2009 and 2010 in the greenhouses of Agricultural Research Station in order to determine the most appropriate sowing date and cultivar of sweet corn. The main plot was sowing date at three levels of August 1, 11 and 21 and the cultivar was the sub-plot at five levels in cluded hybrids Chase, Temptation, Basin, Challenger and Obsession. The sowing and harvest were conducted three times a year, once under open air inside the structure of greenhouse and the others inside the roofed greenhouse. The total results of the years showed that sowing date significantly affected green ear yield (economical yield) at 1% probability level and the cultivar significantly affected it at 5% propability level. The effect of sowing date was significant on forage yield at 5% propability level and the effect of cultivar was significant on it at 1% probability level. The highest green ear yield was 64.59 t.ha-1 (total of three harvests a year) which was superior over the other sowing dates. Obsession and Challenger produced the highest green ear yield (62.96 and 62.80 t.ha-1, respectively) and on the other hand, since cv. Obsession produced 67.57 t forage per hectare which is economically important in autumn and winter, then it is recommended to use this cultivar with the sowing date of August 21 in greenhouses of Jiroft, Iran.
