Transgenic DNA introgressed into traditional maize in Oaxaca, Mexico

Samples of native landraces of maize from two remote locations in Southern Mexico were tested along with a local commercial sample and seeds collected in the same area in 1971. Testing for the presence of a number of common elements in transgenic constructs revealed low levels of transgenic abundance in the native landraces, high levels in the commercial sample and no traces in the historical sample.Subsequent independent testing by the Mexican Government confirmed these results.The results demonstrate a high level of gene flow from industrially produced maize towards populations of progenitor landraces. The diversity of introgressed DNA in the samples is particularly striking given the existence in Mexico of a moratorium on the planting of transgenic maize since 1998.
