The school is facing a number of challenges brought in by the information society and IT technologies. The teacher is not any longer the only carrier of knowledge and the school is not the only place to access the knowledge. The schools are not prepared for the digital age. The dominant pedagogical models and approaches in schools are not sustainable and do not fit with contemporary educational demands. Traditional pedagogy is based mainly on a transmissible modes of teaching and on non - constructivist approaches. Thinking on a global scale profoundly changes the vision of the world, the mission of education and the approaches we choose towards teaching. The challenge is how information technologies can help to enrich and to change approaches towards teaching in order to build a more sustainable education; how teachers can use IT technologies as a tool to enrich learning. The authors point to the benefits and limitations of use of IT technologies for building a more sustainable learning environment in a secondary school setting and the need to acquire technological literacy in order to change the pedagogy for a more efficient and sustainable future.
