Results of scientific research, education and a number of market and production- enhancing measures have contributed to the development of organic farming. In Latvia there is 9.1% of agricultural land managed organically, and the market share of products continues to grow. This is an innovative area where scientific research is devoted for improving the traditional agricultural methods, to introduce the crop rotations with many species of plants, to maintain the natural growing conditions and supply the population with local origin food. There are a lot of recommendations for weeds and other pest control, for ensuring plant nutrients and for reducing power consumption, based on scientific research. Crop rotation, proper and well-timed soil tillage, respected ecosystems and natural plant growth conditions are the main principles for the successful crop production in organic farming system. Farm experience shows that good results could be achieved during the long farming period and strictly according to the organic system conditions proposed by the scientists and practitioners.
