Essential oils and other aromatic materials are important to the flavour and fragrance industry for their olfactory properties or chemical constituents. Lately, there is a resurgence of interest in the usage of aromatic plants or herbs in cosmetics, toiletries and herbal-care products in Malaysia. Despite the current scenario, many are not aware of the chemical properties, therapeutic values and hazardous effects of these plants. The chemical composition and biological properties of aromatic plants provides some scientific information on the ethnobotanical use of some of the plants in the treatment for ailments, skin complaints and cosmetics. Therefore it is essential to explore the potential uses of these oils or the active ingredients as raw materials for pharmaceutical and personal care products. As part of a continuous screening of the availability of essential oils from aromatic plants throughout Peninsular Malaysia, this paper reports ma jor chemical components and biological properties of Cinnamomum sintoc, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Melaleuca cajuputi and Baeckia fructescens.
