Every community in Sarawak has its own knowledge on the uses of plants for medicinal purposes. Efforts are being made to record this knowledge and information on the subject. Sarawak Herbarium, a research branch in the Forest Department, has collected various ethnobotanical specimens since 1970's. To date, a total of 2,371 ethnobotanical plant specimens have been collected. Currently, most of the information and data are recorded into the computer. Sarawak Herbarium will continue its effort to collect more specimens in future to increase the present collection. Corresponding to the objectives of ex-situ conservation in Sarawak, respective gardens were set up for the purpose of planting the medicinal plants. The Ethnobotanical Garden Semengoh, established in 1990, has a total of 767 species of medicinal plants. In the Taman Pertanian, Sg. Sebiew, were planted 100 species and also in the Ethnobotanical Garden Sarna Jaya. The main objective of set ting up these gardens is to enable the public to have better access to information on the uses of medicinal plants by the various ethnic groups in Sarawak.
