Comparative analysis of autotoxicity in Chenopodium album L., Parthenium hysterophorus L. and Rumex dentatus L.

Autotoxicity is the beneficial or harmful effect of a plant species on itself. It also takes place when a plant releases chemical substances in its surrounding that inhibit or delay germination and seedling growth of the other plant from the same species. In the present study, the autotoxic effect of three (Chenopodium album L., Parthenium hysterophorus L.and Rumex dentatus L.) weeds plant extract was investigated. The mature plant aqueous extracts of each weed was assayed at 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8% (w/v) for their effects on seed germination and early seedling growth. Germination (%) declined with the increase in concentration of, extract as compared to the control. In case of P. hysterophorus, 4% and 8% (w/v) concentrations, effectively suppressed the seed germination from 20% to 27%, respectively. Whereas 8% extract concentration reduced seed germination to 43% in C. album. However, aqueous extract of P. hysterophorus plant showed significant stimulatory effect on seedling growth. High concentration of (8%) of C. album has high autotoxicity potential. Results also showed that autotoxicity is more pronounced in C. album and R. dentatus as compared to P. hysterophorus.
