The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of different types of mulching on the evaporation of a free water surface and a wet soil in controlled laboratory conditions, and on different soil variables and agronomic production parameters of a drip irrigated nectarine. Results under controlled laboratory conditions showed a significant reduction of the free water evaporation and the soil evaporation when plastic and other mulches were used. Results of the nectarine orchard experiment showed that mulching treatments had a significant effect on soil moisture, soil temperature and soil salinity. Mulching treatments plastic (P), pine bark (C) and geotextile (G) maintained higher soil moisture than bare soil (D). Mulching treatment P maintained a higher soil temperature than treatments D, C and G along the crop cycle. Based on the seasonal average values of the soil solution electrical conductivity (ECss), weekly measured, the ranking was: P (3.4 dS m-1) < C (4.5 dS m-1) < G (5.1 dS m-1) < D (6.1 dS m-1). Mulching treatments had no significant effects on fruit production and quality, earliness, productivity and irrigation water use efficiency
