Biochemical quality study of genetically diversified brassica genotypes

Biochemical analysis of Brassica genotypes was necessary for determination of quality seed and high yielding genotypes. For this purpose, twelve Brassica viz. Wester, Ganyou-5, Rainbow, Oscar, Vangard, Crusher, Torch, Legend, Altex, Raya Anmol, Peela Raya and T-16-401 were evaluated for biochemical quality parameters i.e. oil, protein, glucosinolates, moisture, oleic acid, linolenic acid and erucic acid during 2006-07 at the Research Farm of Agricultural University, Peshawar, Pakistan. Highest oil content was found in Oscar (52.10%) and lowest in T-16-401 (42.73%). Protein content was highest in T-16-401 (25.12%) and lowest in Vangard (20.38%). Lowest glucosinolates (67.35 mum g-1) were found in Rainbow and highest in T-16-401 (132.7 mum g-1). Oscar had highest moisture contents (7.09%) and Peela Raya Lowest (4.5%). Oleic acid was highest in Wester (54.74%) and lowest in Peela Raya (29.93%). Linolenic acid was lowest in Wester (7.65%) and highest in Raya Anmol (12.8%). Crusher had the lowest amount (36.44%) of erucic acid whereas Raya Anmol had the highest (52.2%). Rainbow was found best for oil (%), protein (%), glucosinolates (mum g-1), moisture (%), oleic acid (%), linolenic acid (%), and erucic acid (%) with values 50.46, 21.19, 67.35, 6.84, 52.48, 8.75 and 36.53, respectively.
