The People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria recently adopted regulations on the prevention and management of situations to be caused in case of catastrophic events (so called ORSEC plans), which includes the need to define flood zones due to possible dam failures. The northern area of Algeria (area partly montainous and partly desertic) is provided by an elaborate network of dams i.e. reservoirs for water supply and irrigation. The Society Energoprojekt – Hidroinženjering was given the hard and copious task to define and analyse the possibly flooded areas in the case of failure of 28 dams in Central and East regions of this region. In addition to a general presentation of the project, this paper depicts particular cases, such as simultaneous or sequential dam failure scenaria. The paper also presents the mathematical models used for simulation, as well as morphological data obtained through the combination of satelite observations and terrestrial data (GPS points), and 3D digital terrain models based on ArcGis technology.
