Natural variation in the essential oil content and chemical composition of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia (Maiden and Betche) Cheel) in Thailand

Objective of this research was to compare essential oil content and chemical composition of 91 plants of tea tree seedling which harvested during different months of the year 2008-2010 in order to select the good quality plant of tea tree. The plant that had high content of essential oil and the main chemical composition of oil complied with the International Standard (ISO 4730 - 2004). The result showed that there were only 9 plants of tea tree gave average oil content from six harvested more than 2 percent. Analysis of oil composition by GC-MS of 9 samples tea tree oil showed that 9 plants of tea tree contained terpinolene content as same as standard (ISO 4730 - 2004). However there were 3 plants of tea tree gave high quality of oil which were sample TBB 3/1, TBB 7/11 and TBB 7/1 with high content of terpinen-4-ol, 39.69, 38.77 and 37.54 percent, respectively and low content of 1,8-cineole, 4.41, 6.56 and 7.06 percent, respectively.
