Screening of extracts from marine orgnisms by inhibition of beta-haematin activity in the search for antimalarial substances

One-hundred and eighty five solvent extracts from 49 specimens of marine plants and 97 specimens of marine animals were screened by beta-haematin inhibition assay. ฺBeta-haematin is the synthetic compound of haemozoin which is the substance for protected the malarial protozoa during the infectious stage in the red blood of human. Totally 42 marine extracts (22.70 percent) showed beta-haematin inhibition activities. The most potent activity with the highest absorbance values at the concentration between 625-5,000 mg/L were belonged to the extracts of mangrove tree (Lumnitzera racemosa), blue sponge (Neopetrosia sp.), blue green algae (Brachytrichia quoyi), seagrass (Cymodocea rotundata), mangrove's seed (Derris trifoliata) and black sponge (Pseudoceratina purpurea). The chemical investigation by TLC supposed the moiety which showed inhibition activity should be alkaloid, phenol, anthraquinone, anthrone and coumarin. The chemical assay in this study was reliable, convenience and rapid for the use of screening for antimicrobial compounds. The extracts of marine organisms in this study were screened as the new sources for antimalarial substance as alternative use for antimalarial drug-resistant.
