In the conditions of the Republic of Belarus there was realized a study on creation of initial material for bulb onion (Allium сера) breeding in local conditions with the maximally high yielding capacity potential, as well as with the balanced biochemical composition, resistant to biotic and abiotic factors of the environment. The analysis of the basic components of chemical composition of onions was carried out. The most valuable samples with high dry matter content were selected. Research results showed that the following variety samples could be used as genetic sources for onion selection for dry matter increase and storage life prolongation: Zasolochnyj (Russia), and also varieties of national selection - Radimych, Dyyament, Kryvitski ruzhovy and Vetraz. In the mentioned above varieties the index of dry matter content was more than 18%, and safety maternal bulbs was 90% and higher. Research results proved that data on chemical composition of onion varieties made it possible to realize regular selection of varieties in accordance with the certain economically valuable traits.
