Influence of low temperature on plants leads to decline of metabolism intensity and development of oxidative stress, resulting with creation of reactive oxygen species and products of lipid peroxidation. The research of the activity of antioxidant enzymes and content of low-molecular antioxidants in tobacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum), transformed with sense gene SOD under influence of low temperature is presented. Tobacco plants transformed by sense gene of chloroplast superoxide dismutase (Fe-SO) and mitochondrial superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) are shown to have higher antioxidant potential as compared to wild-type plants at normal conditions, this being a result of increased expression of superoxide dismutase, higher ascorbate peroxidase activity and higher ascorbate level. Under chilling stress the activities of superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase and catalase are higher in transgenic plants as compared to wild-type plants. Besides total ascorbate as well as total glutathione content are elevated in transgenic plants. Findings confirm the data of low level of ROS and lipid peroxidation products in transgenic plants.
