Data presented in the article demonstrates the varying reaction of tomato plants to infection with Pectobacterium carotovorum when different concentrations of pathogen suspensions are used. At low Pectobacterium carotovorum concentrations typical effector triggered immunity (ETI) is observed. This reaction depends on the presence of functional type III secretion system (T3SS) and its main effector, the DspE protein, in Pectobacterium carotovorum cells. When infected in high numbers, Pectobacterium carotovorum are capable of suppressing the ETI, but if T3SS-defective bacteria are used, the defence response differing from the ETI is observed.
