Investigation of the possibility of earlier sowing date of Sugar beet in lee-ward of winter Barley

Sugar beet farms, in Kerman province, are exposed to continual dry winds due to cyclons of latitude of 30°. Author's observation in a research project to study the sffects of annual windbreak (sunflower) on Sugar beet, showed that Sugar beet sowing date is delayed utile first week of Ordibehesht (April last week), due to wind damages. In this time, sunflower can not protect sugar beet. Because the Sugar beet final yield is dternibed in early weeks of groth season, it seems that planting Sugar beet in leeward of winter Barley will increase the yield and thus increase the efficiency of inputs, due to decrease in wind induced stresses. To study this matter, Barley was planted in month Aban (Nov.). White Sugar Yield of Sugar beet were compared in 3 planting dates and 4 replications, in a Randomized Complete Block Design. In each planting date of Sugar beet, Barley was removed from an square plot of 10×10 m2 and Sugar beet seeds were sowed in it. Two perpendicular strips of Barley with the length of 3 and width of 1 meter were kept in outside and in parallel of two perpendicular sides of the square plot against the dominant winds. In each sowing date 200 seeds, were sowed in and outsid the leeward of Barley and the stablished seedlings were counted. ANOVA shoew no significant differences in WSY of 3 sowing dates. Seedling emergence was lower than 50% outside the leeward, comparing the mean of 70% in leeward, therefore, other comparisons such as water consumption were not done.
