Evaluation of Tetraploid Half sib Families (HSF) to Rhizomania ania Resistance

Use of genetic resistance and development of resistant cultivars is the best option for the control of Rhizomania disease. The objective of this study is to evaluate the tetraploeid half sib families produced from the seeds of single plants of four resistant diploeid populations. In 1388, 204 tetraploid half sib families along with two susceptible and resistant cultivars (as check) were evaluated in six observational trials in randomized complete block design with 36 cultivars at six replicates at Zarqan station, Fars Agricultural and Natural Resource Center, in a field with low to moderate infection. In each replicate, every plot consisted of one row 3 m long and 50 cm apart. During the growing season, recordings were carried out for quantitative (initial plant number after thinning, dead plants, rotted plants and disease severity index) and ordinal traits (growth and uniformity scores during July and September). Analysis of variance for quantitative traits and Friedman nonparametric analysis on ordinal traits showed that significant difference existed among the genotypes evaluated in the three studies with respect to the initial plant number after thinning, disease index and growth, and uniformity scores during July and September. Based on comparisons carried out with check cultivars, disease severity index for genotype screenings was found to be the best option. Thus, the genotypes 301-HSF-32, 303-HSF-5, 303-HSF-14, 302-HSF-8, 303-HSF-40, 303-HSF-63, 304-HSF-3, 304-HSF-4, 304-HSF-40, 304-HSF-44, 304-HSF-46, 304-HSF-55, 304-HSF-6, 304-HSF-70, 304-HSF-78, 304-HSF-83, 304-HSF-86 and 304-HSF-89 were selected as the superior ones.
