Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is the most common crop in Latvia. The aim of the research was to identify the variation of grain yield and protein content depending on weather conditions, different rates of nitrogen(N)fertilizer amounts applied (N60, N90, N120, N150), and cultivar. The field trial with winter wheat cultivars ‘Bussard’ and ‘Zentos’ was carried out at the Latvia University of Agriculture, Study and Research Farm “Peterlauki” during the growing seasons 2009/2010, 2010/2011 and 2010/2012. Meteorological conditions had a major impact on the winter wheat grain yield; less effect had nitrogen fertilizer and the interaction between both factors. Nitrogen fertilizer had highly significant effect on the grain protein content. When the growing conditions were warmer compared with the mean of the long-term period, the grain protein content was the highest. The grain of the cultivar ‘Bussard’ had higher protein content and lower grain yield than cultivar ‘Zentos’. The average data of both cultivars proved that there was a significant negative correlation between the grain yield and the protein content.
