Two-row spring hull-less barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) variety ‘Irbe’ was bred at the State Priekuli Plant Breeding Institute in the time period of 2000-2010 from cross combination Filippa/CDC McGwire//Kristaps. Official tests for Value for Cultivation and Use (VCU) and Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability (DUS) for ‘Irbe’ were completed during 2008 – 2009, and the variety was included in the Latvian Plant Variety Catalogue in 2011. The grain yield of ‘Irbe’ during different trials varied from 76% to 102% of standard covered barley varieties. The variety has medium early maturity, high grain volume weight, a high content of beta-glucans, medium tall plants with productive spikes, a low level of infection with powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis) and net blotch (Pyrenophora teres). Grain is suitable for healthy food and for feed.
