Investigation on adaptability and performance of industrial eucalypt provenances at different ecological zones (Ardebil province)

Extension of plantation of fast growing tree species on proper lands of the country in order to guarantee industrial requirements and reduce wood imports should be pursued and considered. Eucalypts are one of the best fast growing plants due to their role in soil and water conservation, short rotation and high fiber production capacity and ecological flexibility. The aim of the study was to investigate the adaptability of six Eucalyptus species and provenances, including: E. camaldulensis 41-ch, E. grandis 156-ch, E. macarthurii 169-sh, E. saligna 171-ch, E. viminalis 168-ch and E. viminalis 168-sh at Ardebil province (Parsabad Experimental Station) under statistical design of Randomized Complete Blocks at three replicates and 3 x 3 m. spacing. There were 49 seedlings at each plot which have been planted in 2008. The results showed that there were significant differences between the species and provenances in respect to survival, stem diameter, total stem height, crown diameter and quality characteristics. The provenance E. camaldulensis 41-ch was the best one in comparison to the other five species and provenances in respect to its survival (93.6 %), total stem height (3.8 m.), dbh stem diameter (4.1 cm), collar stem diameter (5.2 cm) and crown diameter (2.2 m.).
