Evaluation of some seed treatment fungicides for controlling of fusarium wilt of chickpea

The efficacy of six fungicides were evaluated against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri causing chickpea wilt in vitro, greenhouse and field conditions during 2006-2010 in Kermanshah province. The fungicides were Captan, Carbendazim, Tilt, Carboxin-thiram, Chlorotalonil and Iprodion+ Carbendazim. In laboratory tests efficacy of the fungicides was tested on mycelial growth of the pathogen at 0.01, 0.1, 1.0, 10.0, and 100.0 ìg.a.i.ml-1 PDA in a factorial experiment under a completely randomized design with four replications. In the greenhouse and field experiments, all the fungicides were tested on controlling seedling wilt under a completely randomized design and randomized complete block design, respectively with four replications. The most effective fungicide for controlling the mycelial growth of the pathogen under in vitro condition was Carbendazim. Tilt and Iprodion+Carbendazim were taken the next group. Mycelial growth of the pathogen was completely inhibited on PDA at 1, 10 and 100 ppm. of Carbendazim, Iprodion+Carbendazim and Tilt respectively. In greenhouse and field trials these three fungicides and Carboxin-thiram were highly effective for increasing the seedling emergence and reducing wilt incidence on chickpea seedlings. Tilt showed some phytotoxic effects on seed germination and seedling growth. So Carbendazim, Iprodion+Carbendazim and Carboxin-thiram were the best fungicides against fusarium wilt of chickpea because of reducing wilt incidence, increasing of seedling emergence and improving seed yield.
