Antimicrobial activity of Cinnamomum impressicostatum

The essential oils and extracts (hexane, chloroform and methanol) of the leaf and stem bark of C.impressicostatum were assayed against three types of microorganisms i.e: Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria and fungi including yeast, candidas and dermatophytes. The essential oils exhibited moderate antifungal activity towards Candida alicans, Microsporum canis, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and T. rubrum with MIC values of 2.50 microgram/micralitre. The hexane extract showed strong antifungal activity (i.d.=15.0mm) against Candida albicans, Candida lipolytica and Microsporum canis. The chloroform extract showed the greatest activity over a wide spectrum of microorganisms. The hexane and chloroform extracts contained similar chemical components which are identified as safrole, methyl cinnamate and 3-(3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl) propenal. Methyl cinnamate which represented 60 per cent of the total bark oil of C. impressicostatum exhibited significant activity against Candida albicans, C. lipolytica, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Microsporum canis and Bacillus cereus with a MIC value of 1.25 microgram/micralitre. This suggest that the overall activity of the hexane and chloroform extracts were probably due to the large amount of mehyl cinnamate present in them.
