Screening and characterization of bacteriocin-producing lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from silage and their application for silage preparation were carried out with the aim of utilizing the antimicrobial activity against undesirable microorganisms in silage. Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis RO 32 and RO50 isolated from paddy rice silage were identified on the basis of 16S rRNA sequence analysis and DNA-DNA hybridization. Two strains were shown to display anti-microbial activity against a wide range of bacteria. Silages inoculated with strain RO 32 and RO 50 were well preserved with a high content of lactic acid and low pH values.
