The nutritive values of 3 commonly used legume tree foliages namely Acacia nilotica (Acacia, Albezia procera (Albezia) and Sesbania acculeata (sesbania) and the contents of different forms of tannins were studies. Crude Protein (CP) in all the foliages was high and various forms of fibres were high in Albezia. The phenolic compounds in the form of Total phenols (TP), Total tannins (TT), Condensed Tannin (CT), Hydrolizable tannin (HT) and Protein precipitable phenolics (PPP) varied from 4.9 to 20.1, 2.6 to 13.6, 0.07 to 1.2, 0.04 to 4.4, 3.7 to 14.7% respectively. Drying in the shade reduced these values. Potential degradability in the rumen of Acacia and Sesbania were high (av. 85%)and appeared to have no effect of tannins compared to Albezia (52%) in degradability values. Addition of Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) in Acacia increased fermentation 71% more than that of Albezia and Sesbania respectively. The masked effect of tannins in foliages in feed utilization can be improve by inhibition of tannin with PEG.
