Environmental impacts and the application of limit of acceptable change technique for management of recreation sites

The public periodically have the urge to be in contact with nature in order to satisfy their need for leisure. They usually turn to recreational forests or natural areas to fulfill such leisure needs, increasing arrival of visitors to these places would cause widespread impacts upon the resources. The management in facing the challenges however has to resolve the problem before the conditon of the area would become adverse. Among the management approaches that could be applied to control the predicament involve the determination of carrying capacity (C.C) of the site by controlling the number of users or recreating public. However, other techniques such as the Limit of Acceptable Change(LAC) in dealing with the environmental impact would be appropriate to be applied. This involved the determination of environmental, social and managerial attributes to determines the appropriate use level and the conditions of the sites desired based on the managenet objectives and decision. LAC techniques identifies the issues being addressed to determine the recreation opportunity classes and development of indicators for a prudent management action. A study was conducted at gaining some some preliminary understanding, involving the Taman Negara Pahang management and related personnel , on the impact on soil and vegatation and their management significance. The specifically involved the evaluation of the ecological problems found in the campground area and trails in Kuala Tahan based on their familiarity with the resources condition. In addition, the study was to identify and describe the recreational opportunity classes, impacts on soil and vegetation and identification of the indicators for the development of the LAC procedure. The study showed that this management technique can be applied to systematic planning and an uncomplicated tool to manage the impacts resulting from recreation in a forested setting.
