Effect of potato pulp silage suplementation on nitrogen utilization in ruminants.

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of potato pulp silage on nitrogen (N) utilization in ruminants. In the first experiment, nutritive value and N balance in sheep were measured. Four wether sheep were fed four diets, Lactobacillus rhamnosus (PL) or Rhizopus oryzae (PR) treated and control (PC) potato pulp silage, which was included in the ratio of 60:40% with alfalfa hay (AL) alone, in a 4x4 Latin square design. In the second experiment, three Holstein steers cannulated at the rumen and duodenum were fed grass silage based diets supplemented with potato pulp silage as a substitude for rolled corn at levels of 0, 50 and 100% on a DM basis in a 3x3 Latin square design. The digestibility and nutritive value of potato pulp silage were not affected by addition of the inoculants and it had a digestible energy of about 13MJ/kgDM. The concentration of rumen ammonium N and serum urea N decreased significantly for PC, PL, PR diets versus AL and consequently N excretion into urine decreased. However, N excretion in to feces did not significantly differ among the treatments. There were no significant differences in the ruminal N utilization and the non-ammonia N supply to the duodenum of steers fed grass silage supplemented with potato pulp silage as a substitude for rolled corn. These data suggested that potato pulp silage has a similar value as an energy source for ruminal microorganism with rolled corn.
