Energy sector plays an important role in the development and progress of other economic sectors. Both the public and private sectors require considerable imputs, capacities and new initiatives in managing and organizing resources to generate higher productivity. These objectives must be in view with the main objectives of the Malaysia energy sector that are to ensure adequate, secure and cost effective supplies, utilising the resources efficiently and minimizing the negative impacts of energy production, conversion, transportation and utilisation on the environment. Malaysia`s four fuel strategy of oil, gas hydro and coal s the primary energy supply has been expanded to incorporate New and Renewable Energy as the fifth fuel. This means that renewable energy will play significant role in shaping the nation`s energy resources diversification. Being a major producer of palm oil and its location in the equatorial region both palm oil wastes and solar energy has been identified as the most promising green energy options for Malaysia. Efforts are also made to introduce and promote solar PV, biomass and landfill gas for distributed electricity generation. There are also continuous efforts by the government and private sectors in promoting and implementing DSM which include load management and end-use energy efficiency. The replication of both renewable energy technologies and DSM efforts across the country could also reduce the need for new fossil-fuel power generation capacity. Ddistrict cooling, Thermal Energy Storage and Cogeneration are also gaining popularity in industries. If these options are implemented, growths of centralised grid supply are expected to decline to a more suitable level. Success of a green energy future can only be assured with the support, commitment and participation of all Malaysians. At this initial stage, it is natural for the Government of Malaysia (GoM) to assume the leadership role with Pusat Tenaga Malaysia as its implementing agent to coordinate and commercialize this ambitious programme.
