Potential of green soybean production in Malaysia

Green soybean has been identified as a potential cro in Malaysia. Presently the crop is widely grown in Japan, Taiwan and China. Its young green pods are popularly consumed by the Japanese as snack food and vegetable. Green soybean is rich in protein, vitamins, minerals and Omega-3 factor. The protein content of green soybean is 12% on a fresh weight basis as compared with 7.6% for lima bean and 5.4% for peas. Beside for human consumption, it is also found suitable to be used locally as fresh green feed for livestock, especially rabbit and goat. In Malaysia, the crop is suitable to be grown on most soil types in the various agroclimate regions, irrigated or rainfed, as intercrops in perennial crops or in crop rotations with other non-leguminous annual crops as well as integrated with livestock rearing. Production technologies especially for small scale farming are available. In view of its potential, Malaysian farmers are encouraged to grow the crop.
