Nitrogen management in lowland rice is characterized by high nitrogen input, low N-use efficiency and high N losses.Nitrogen management strategies that are productive, stable and environmentally safe across soil types and over time are critically needed, particularly in Asia where demographic forecasts indicate that rice supplies must increase by 1.6% model, CERES-Rice.The CERES-Rice model allows quantitative determination of the growth and development of rice crop and nutrient dynamics as influenced by weather, soil properties and crop management under flooded as well as up land conditions.The model has been validated for a number of sites in the tropics and subtropics with satisfactory performance.The use of CERES-Rice to identify optimum nitrogen management strategies is presented for sites from the Philippines and Malaysia.
