Comparison of four algorithms for computing inbreeding coefficients

The mixed model method using animal models is the method of choice in the genetic evaluation of livestock in many countries, which requires inbreeding coefficients of animals. In order to speed up the computation of inbreeding coefficients with a direct method in large populations, a relatively efficient method for construction the lists of ancestors in which the integrity of chronological order within each ancestral path is kept was described. Simulating a relatively large population, the computational efficiency of the current algorithm was compared to three algorithmsthese were the original direct algorithm, one of its modifications and another direct algorithm. The current algorithm became considerably faster than the original one and its modification, when the number of generations increased, and was also fast relative to another didrect algorithm, when the average number of generations was almost less than 17. When only animals born in year 30 were evaluated, knowing inbreeding coefficients for their ancestors, the current algorithm was much faster than the algorithms compared, indicating its possible advantage in updating situations.
