Yield responses of rice varieties on different top-dress in an organic-based nutrient management

Rice varieties have different responses to nutrient application to achieve its optimum yield. Varietal response may also depend on the nutrient source. Hence, the yield response of inbred and hybrid varieties to different organic-based nutrient management was determined. Field experiment was conducted in 2012 wet season using the following treatments: 1) Basal applications of Rice Straw Compost (RSC) and Rice Straw Compost with Chicken Manure (RSCM) and 2) Top-dress applications of Inorganic Foliar Fertilizer (IFF), Organic Foliar Fertilizer (OFF), Urea, and Wild Sun Flower (WSF). Inbred variety, PSB Rc82 and hybrid variety Mestiso 20 were used. Results showed that RSC (5.3 t/ha) and RSCM (5.4 t/ha) had comparable grain yields. For both basal application, PSB Rc82 (5.6 t/ha) had higher grain yield than Mestiso 20 (5.8 t/ha). Likewise, all top dress fertilizer materials performed better with PSB Rc82 than Mestiso 20. Urea (5.8 t/ha) and WSF (5.6 t/ha) had higher grain yield compared to IFF (5.0 t/ha) and OFF (4.9 t/ha). However, accounting for the input and energy costs, wild sunflower was more laborious and expensive than urea. Labor and transportation cost in using wild sunflower was PhP 103,869.00/ha while the cost in using urea was PhP 4,687.50/ha. PSB Rc82 had better yield response to different top-dress nitrogen applications than Mestiso 20.
