On-farm evaluation of promising garden pea varieties in Madaymen, Kibungan, Benguet, Philippines

Garden pea is one of the most expensive vegetable legumes in the Philippines. It is mainly grown in the highlands of Benguet Province. The farmers are mainly dependent on traditional varieties that are either low yielding or with inferior pod quality. This study was undertaken to evaluate the growth and yield and acceptability of six promising garden pea varieties namely:CGP11, CGP13, CGP18A, CGP34 and CGP59 including 'Kalantao', the commercial variety as the check variety in Madaymen, Kibungan, Benguet. Results indicated that the six promising varieties of garden pea differed significantly in number of days from emergence to flowering, leaflet length and width, plant height at 35 DAP [days after planting], node bearing first flower cluster, first pod and last pod, number of nodes per plant, number of flower and pod per cluster, fresh pod yield per 10sq m plot and profitability. All the varieties had comparable pod maturity,plant height at harvest, pod length and width and resistance to leaf miner and powdery mildew. CGP11 and 'Kalantao' produced the highest marketable and total fresh pod yield per plot which recorded 133% and 126% return on cash expense, respectively. CGP10 was liked much by the farmers in Kibungan in terms of pod appearance, pod color and crunchiness and general acceptability. It was the most preferred variety by the farmers among the six promising varieties tested as it commanded higher price in the market due to its quality pods than the existing commercial variety with bigger and lighter green pods.
