Growth and 'French bean' yield of eight bush snap bean accession grown under organic production system in La Trinidad, Benguet [Philippines]

Organic production of vegetables is becoming popular in the Philippines. In Benguet, bush snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) was found to be one of the most suitable crops to organic production system (Tandang et al., 2011). Organic fertilizer, 'BSU Growers Compost' was mixed with soil at a rate of 5 kg/5 sq m plot (4T/ha) before hilling up. Irrigation and weeding were done appropriately to ensure good growth of the plant. All the eight bush snap bean accessions emerged in 7-8 DAP. Bokod, Green Crop, HAB19 and Contender were the earliest to flower in 41 DAP. Torrent exhibited the tallest plants while Landmark had the shortest plants. At 30 DAP, Green Crop recorded the largest canopy cover while BBL 274 had significantly largest canopy cover at 45 and at 60 DAP. All accessions produced 4-6 flowers/cluster and 3-5 pods/cluster. BBl 774 produced the highest number of Fresh bean/plant. It had also the longest pods while Bokod had the broadest pods. The pod diameter of eight bush snap bean accessions ranged from 0.2-0.5 cm indicating their suitability for French bean production. Sablan produced the highest French bean yield/plot (4.5 kg/5 sqm) and total yield/ha (9.12T), highest ROCE (319.50%) and highest acceptability rating by farmers and consumers together with BBl 274 and Bokod. All the eight bush snap bean accessions exhibited resistance to bean rust and moderate tolerance to pod borer.
