Effects of different temperatures on the biology of (American bollworm) Helicoverpa armigera Lepidoptera: Noctuidae in laboratory

Helicoverpa armigera (American bollworm) is major lepidopteron pest of many crops and it is widely distributed throughout the world. It causes severe infestation to cotton and other crops in Pakistan specially Sindh. The study of biology of Helicoverpa armigera was carried out in 2009 June-November on three different temperatures ((27, 31 and 35 plus minus 1 degree C). The longest development period observed on 27 plus minus 1 degree C while shortest development period was observed on 35 plus minus 1 degree C. Maximum mortality was recorded from egg to 2nd larval instars and lowest mortality was recorded from 4th larval instars to 6th larval instars. Present study revealed that shortest life cycle was main cause of population abundance and when larvae reached at fourth larval instars it is difficult to control.
