Banking profitability off-balance sheet activities: the case of European Union countries, the USA and Canada
2013
Kasompei, D.
This thesis examines the profitability of off-balance sheets in the European, US and Canadian banking sectors. The analysis indicates that the banking system is unique. For this reason this thesis attempts to shed light on bank-specific variables which, compared to off-balance sheet structure, yield significant results in profitability. Following, this, the study examines an unbalanced dataset of 264 banks during 2002 and 2010. The findings suggest that there is no significant difference between the off-balance sheet activities and the return on equity, and the independent variable of off-balance sheet to total assets does not affect the return on average assets and the equity ratio over the research period.
