Ratoons in sugarcane (Saccharum spp) cropping refer to the crops after cutting the plant cane. Ratooning is an important practice in all sugarcane producing countries and occupies about 50% of the total area under cane. Ratooning has so far received great attention by sugarcane growers, for it saves cost of planting of a new crop. The efficiency of ratoning in sugarcane is a varietal character; some varieties produce bumper crops of ratoon while others gives moderate or poor performance and ratoon usually gives yield with better juice quality However, with proper management the first ratoon can out yield the plant crops. In fact, the full benefit of sugarcane cultivation can not be achieved without taking at least one ratoon crop. Sugarcane genotypes greatly differ in their ability to produce profitable ratoon crops, to survive adverse conditions and to produce tillers during early growth stages (Tondon et al., 1957). In the present investigation, 1950 genotypes belonging to 39 families were studied, on family basis, with an attempt to assess the ratoning ability based on the characters that were genetically inherited and known to influence the yield of ratoons in sugarcane. The experimental material consisted of 1950 genotypes derived from parents originated from intervariatal and interspecific crosses program. Hence, wide genetic variability was insured in the genotypes handled. The material was raised as ratoon crop during June, 2004, after plant cane harvest at the Sugarcane Breeding Institute Coimbatore, South India, in a randomized complete block design with two replications. A plot size of 6 x 0.9 m, consisted of 3 rows, was used to accommodate 36 genotypes and each row with 12 genotypes spaced at 50 cm apart
