Disk harrow induced changes in soil physical properties at different soil moisture contents

This experiment was conducted at the Seed Propagation Farm in the Rahad Scheme, Sudan, 1998 to determine the effect of disk harrow on soil physical properties at different soil moisture contents. The soil clay content was 55%. Soil bulk density, shear strength, clod size distribution, wheel slip and draft were measured. It was found that wheel slip and draft were directly proportional to the moisture content with correlation coefficients of 0.91 and 0.90, respectively. On the other hand, bulk density and shear strength were indirectly proportional to moisture content with correlation coefficients of 0.45 and 0.71, respectively. The increase in soil moisture content increased the specific draft and power requirement. Larger clods appeared at higher moisture contents. Fine clods ranged from 20% to 37%. The present study suggested that the disk harrow can be used as primary tillage implements in clay soils with moisture contents ranging from 11% to 30%
