The goal of this work was to assess the seasonal variability and the changes of basal soil respiration in relation to the elevation gradient. Soil samples were taken along the transect in the altitude of 1000-1450 m a.s.l. several times during the vegetation period. Although significant differences in basal respiration were found between sites, no trend in relation to the altitude was found. At the beginning of the vegetation period basal respiration was significantly higher and in July significantly lower than in the other sampling dates. As it is shown, there is a significant correlation between basal respiration and soil water content, however, not during the whole vegetation period. We suppose, that at sites in this altitude the temperature and available nutrients probably are more important for soil microbial activity than the water supply.
