Evaluation of damages caused by the cut-to-length technology on beech stand after salvage felling | Poškodenie bukových porastov harvesterovou technológiou pri spracovaní vetrovej kalamity

Presented paper is aimed on evaluation of the remaining forest stand damages caused by harvester logging technology at the Smolenice Forest Enterprise, Forest department Pila and their comparison with damages, caused in similar conditions by classical technology (chain saw + skidder). Measurements were performed in 3 forest stands of age about 55 years, where harvester (John Deere 1070D) and forwarder (John Deere 870E) performed wind caused salvage cutting. Total damage ratio of selected stands, number and distribution of injuries per stem, surface of injuries, and distribution of injured trees through the stand were explored, for classical and cut-to-length (CTL) technology. Damage ratio remaining stands was 15, resp. 32% for harvester and 18% for skidder. CTL technology injured more trees, but injuries were smaller in comparison with the skidder. Most of injured area was situated above 30 cm on the stem after skidder and above 30 cm after the CTL technology. Most of injured area was placed on stems near the forwarding (skidding) lines.
