The paper presents methodological possibilities of valuation of outdoor recreation in forests. There were analysed different methods and methodical approaches suitable to valuation of recreation based on various principles and criteria (preference and non-preference methods, cost based methods, revenue based methods, direct and indirect methods). A practical application of two preference methods (contingent valuation method and travel cost method) is done in the study to evaluate the outdoor recreation in forests in Slovakia. To gather information and data for the preference methods and on collection of forest fruits and mushrooms, two surveys were being conducted during November-December 2006 (pilot study - 1534 questionnaires) and November 2007 - January 2008 (valuation study) by face-to-face method. The consumer surplus by Contingent Valuation Method was about 0.55 €/visit and by Travel Cost Method 1.2 €/visit in first alternative, 5.9 €/visit in the second alternative, respectively. Value of forest fruits and mushrooms collection was in the amount of 140 mil €.
