Study on Dormancy and Phenology of Wild Barley (Hordeum spontaneum) in Wheat Fields.

In order to investigate comparative phenology of wild barley (hordeum spontaneum c.kock) with wheat (triticum aestiuum L.), and its control by stale bed preparation, a twoyear experiment was conducted in the experimented fields of Agricultural research center of Varamin Ahvaz. during 2007-2008. In the first year, wild barley and wheat were planted beside each other in four replications, and during growth, their phenology was recorded according to Zadoks scale. At wheat harvest stage, wheat was harvested, but wild barley seed was allowed to flush on the ground. Immediately after harvest, an experiment with nine treatments and four replications was conducted in randomized complete block design to determine the best period of irrigation for stale bed preparation to plant corn and investigate effects of this practice on the reduction of weed deusity in this crop. Immediately after corn harvest, wheat was planted, and its yield and wild barley density was recorded. Results indicated in all locations wild barley passed their phenological stages earlier than wheat cultivars; Chamran (in Ahvaz). Growing degree days for completion of wild barley growth stages in Ahwaz was 1839, 1229, 1060 and 2471,.while this for Kavir Chamran wheat cultivars was 2569. At tillering stage, wild barley growth rate was faster than wheat up to stem elongation where wheat growth rate exceeded that of wild barley. Delaying of stale seed bed in summer, caused the highest germination of wild barley and lower population if this weed in the following wheat stand. Additionly, corn as second crop can decrease wild barley seed in seed bank.
