Evaluating the soil seed bank of hordeum spontaneum C. koch and its germination at different ploughing depths by using herbicides and without them.

In order to control wild barley ( Hordeum spontaneum C. koch) in wheat fields, rhree different ploughing depths ( 10, 20, 30 cm) together with three different herbicide treatments( Topik at 0.8 1Ih, puma super at I11h and without herbicid) were examined in a split block design with four replications in Fras (Zarghan) Agricultural Research Center , during 1999-2000. Considering early shuttering of wild barley spikes, differences of its seedbank density in soil was taken to be an index of treatments effect. An auger with 5.5cm diameter was used for soil sampling in pre, post¬ ploughing and after harvest stages, taking 648 soil samples of237.5cc from 0-10, 10¬20 and 20-30 em depths in each stages. 1944 soil samples were taken totaJJy. Seeds were seperated from soil samples, lived ( viable and dormant) and dead seeds were counted in each sample. During the growing season, seedlings and spikes densities were detennined by two 0.25 m2 quadrats in each plot. Results indicated that weed seeds density of post- ploughing and after harvest were statistcally more than before ploughing. In three stages of pre, pos.t- ploughing and after harvest, number of seeds in 0-10 cm samples were -significantly more than deeper ones. Number of wild barley seedlings in 10cm ploughing is less than deeper ploughing depths. Correlation between seedling and seedbank densities of wild barley were cited. Number of seedlings and spikes in different treatments was not significant in the growing season. Therefore herbicides were not effective in wild barley control.
