Evaluation of resistance to powdery mildew in Preliminary, Advanced, Elite lines and cultivars of barley at adult plant stage

Powdery mildew of barley caused by the fungal pathogen, Blumeria graminis f.sp. hordei, is one of the most important diseases of barley worldwide including the major barley production regions in Iran. The use of disease-resistant cultivars is known as the most effective and the most economical methods of powdery mildew control. The objective of this study was to evaluate the level of powdery mildew resistance in preliminary, advanced and elite lines of warm, cold and moderate zones of barley national breeding program. Evaluation of resistance was conducted at adult plant stage under the natural conditions of disease epidemic at Agricultural Research Stations of Torogh (Mashhad), Safi Abad (Dezful) and Araghi Mahale (Gorgan) which are known as hotspot regions for powdery mildew development. From the total number of 200 lines of warm zone evaluated in Dezful, 19 lines showed no infection, 1 line was resistant, 43 lines were evaluated as moderately susceptible and 137 lines as susceptible. From 420 lines of moderate and cold zones evaluated in Torogh station, 136 lines showed no infection and 190 lines were evaluated as resistant, 91 lines as moderately susceptible and 3 lines as susceptible . In Araghi Mahale station, from 240 lines of moderate zone , 1 line showed no infection and 34 lines were evaluated as resistant, 86 lines as moderately susceptible and 119 lines as susceptible. Results of powdery mildew evaluation in promissing and due to release lines using the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) showed that some lines are carrying high level of partial resistant. Results of this study will be used for the selection of superior lines that show desirable morphological and agronomical traits.
