Study on resistance of greenhouse cucumber cultivars to leafminer Liriomyza sativae (Dip.: Agromyzidae).

Vegetable leafminer, Liriomyza sativae Blanchard (Dip.: Agromyzidae), is a serious pest of cucumber in the greenhouses of Iran. In high densities, the pest causes great damage to greenhouse crops. Currently, the most applicable method for control of L. sativae is chemical method, which is frequently used by farmers. Regarding concerns about the adverse effects of pesticides on environment, the present study aimed to investigate an alternative pest management strategy, i.e. plant resistance. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with 7 treatments ("Nasim", "Storm", "Janet", "Khassib", "Caspian", "Afzal" and "Radiant"), and 4 replicattions. The response variables measured were infestation level, damage level, feeding preference, oviposition preference, developmental time and yield loss. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and mean comparisons were performed using Duncan s multiple range test. The results indicated that "Janet" had the highest level of resistance compared to other varieties, i.e. "Janet" had the lowest infestation (21.72 0.65), lowest damage (0.35 0.02), smallest number of feeding punctures (1.33 0.02), lowest yield loss (21.75 1.16) and the highest larval developmental time (6.78 0.07). Based on the results, deployment of "Janet" cultivar is recommended as one of the components in managing L. sativae in greenhouse of Iran.
